Day 1 - Our tour begins with transfer from Sofia to the mountain resort of Pamporovo in the Rodopi Mountains. The Mourgavets hotel where we'll stay for two nights is at 1500 m above sea level and is surrounded by beautiful primeval coniferous forests. There is a breathtaking view of the pine clad mountains from the hotel. This is a sight we hope you'll never forget from your stay in the Central Rodopi Mountains. On the way to Pamporovo we値l stop at Bachkovo Monastery for a short rest and sightseeing.
Day 2 - Transfer (lasting about two hours) to the Trigrad Gorge (again in the Rodop Mountains). The Trigrad Gorge area is part of the Rodopi Mountains but it is something quite different from the rounded hills covered with coniferous forests near the Perelik hotel, where we値l be accommodated in the evening. The first thing that impresses the visitor are the huge cliffs towering above and the deep rocky valley, where the meandering Trigrad river can hardly be seen. Strange trees of a local subspecies of the Black Pine (Pinus nigra) grow right out of the rocks without any soil for their roots to dig into. All the time while we are there we cannot help but stand in awe before the nature痴 grandeur. Unfortunately, this is only a poor and sketchy description of this extraordinary place with its caverns and the rumble of its waterfalls. One can hardly imagine the gorge beauty if one does not see it with one's own eyes. This exceptionally beautiful area is 1200 m above sea level. It is approximately an hour drive from the hotel in Pamporovo. We will set out on a hike for about 2 hours along the road to reach the gorge proper. Depending on the time available we can also visit the Yagodina Cave, a very long underground formation. 1500 m of it are made suitable for visitors. It is exceptionally beautiful with its inner halls, narrow corridors, and thousands-of-years-old stalactites, stalagmites and stalactons, descending and ascending from everywhere around us. The temperature down there is about 50 C so be prepared with some extra clothing. The walk is very easy and pleasant, we are accompanied by a local guide. In the evening our car will bring us in the hotel of Mourgavets in the mountain resort Pamporovo. Dinner and night at the hotel.
Day 3 - A long but necessary transfer to the lowlands along the Bulgarian south Black Sea coast. We will stay 2 nights at the Park hotel, just outside the town of Bourgas and close to the Atanasovsko salt Lake Nature Reserve and the Bourgas city beach.
Day 4 - A visit to the Ropotamo Nature Reserve. We値l have two easy hikes each one lasting about an hour and a half. Forest, marshes, a river, shrubs and sand dunes at the Ropotamo Reserve in the morning. The picturesque coastline just south of Sozopol and a walk in the old town and the harbor in the afternoon. In the late afternoon we return to the Park hotel for dinner and night.
Day 5 - Transfer to the town of Kavarna with a stop for sightseeing and lunch at Nesebar old town. Late afternoon accommodation at Denitsa hotel for 2 nights. The hotel is outside the town, on a hill overlooking the sea. Two nice wooded valleys can also be seen from the hotel.
Day 6 - A trip to the Kaliakra Steppe Nature Reserve. This is the southernmost outreach of the East European steppe and, as far as the eye can see, there is only steppe interspersed here and there with scrub and small stunted trees. The steppe is traversed by unexpectedly deep valleys. The coast is rocky, with vertical reddish-orange cliffs falling away from over 150 m into the clear bluish-green depths of the sea. In front of us are the remains of the ancient Kaliakra fortress, which is shrouded in legends. We値l have here an easy hike for about an hour along the rocky coast and among the ruins. A lunch at the local restaurant. In the afternoon we値l visit the Yailata Archeological Reserve, with another easy hike along the rocky sea coast, for about two hours. In the late afternoon we return to the Denitsa hotel for dinner and night.
Day 7 - Transfer to Varna for internal flight to Sofia, where our tour is over.
