Bansko



Bansko is a small town in the Blagoevgrad district located at the foot of the Pirin mountain in south-eastern Bulgaria at an altitude of 936 m above sea level. It is situated at a crossroads of important routes from Central Bulgaria to Greece. Convenient motor ways connect Bansko with the district center Blagoevgrad and other towns in the region. The population of Bansko is 9 500.
 



Bansko is a center of winter and summer tourism. The mountain peaks near the town, the numerous lakes, the old pine woods make it a favorite place for recreation, sport and tourism. The nearby village Bania located only 5 km from the town is famous for its 27 thermal mineral springs. Due to the high elevation the climate in Bansko is cooler. The annual average temperature is 9.0°C. The winters are colder - the average temperature in January is - 1.9°C. Winds blow seldom in Bansko. 77.1% of all days in the year are windless. In summer blow mostly mountain-valley winds bringing fresh air into the town. The temperatures in the months June, July and August range from 16.8°C to 36.5°C. The average humidity in a summer is about 48%.
